The Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the region’s public universities and in coordination with the Canary Islands Tourism Observatory, has presented the findings of the report ‘Sustainability of Tourism in the Canary Islands 2023’. Analysing 16 key areas of tourism sustainability from social and environmental perspectives, the report sheds light on crucial aspects of the industry.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, José Manuel Sanabria, revealed the insights derived from the research carried out by the University of La Laguna and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The report aims to transfer valuable information to all sectors linked to tourism in the region, facilitating the formulation of future tourism policies.
A highlight is that 21.5% of tourists visiting the islands stated that they would be willing to choose sustainable options, even if this causes them some discomfort in their travel experience. The report covers a range of sustainability indicators, including destination attractiveness, tourist satisfaction, seasonal patterns, economic impacts, innovation, energy management, waste management, climate change mitigation, and governance.
The Deputy Minister emphasised the Canary Islands’ commitment to sustainable development, as evidenced by the Observatory’s membership in the World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO).
