The Canary Islands successfully hosted the XXVIII Conference of Presidents of Ultraperipheral Regions of the European Union on November 8 and 9. The meeting, deemed “crucial” by the spokesperson of the Canary Islands government, Alfonso Cabello, saw the notable presence of the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu.
During the event, representatives from the eight ultraperipheral regions, including the Canary Islands, addressed common concerns, focusing on the concept of ultraperiphery and its role in generating opportunities for the southern border of Europe.
The transfer of the presidency of the Conference of Presidents of the OR’s took place, moving from the Canary Islands to La Reunion. The final declaration set the roadmap for joint political action among these regions in Spain, France, and Portugal.
High-level representatives from the participating regions’ governments, as well as European figures like the European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, and the delegate minister for Overseas Territories of the French Government, Philippe Vigier, contributed to the success of the event.
