Unlocking the potential of innovation, circularity, and digitalisation for accelerating new marine-based ecotourism, joint practices, and businesses in ORs.

After three years of EMFAF-funded innovation, TWINNEDbySTARS officially concludes in September 2026. But while the project ends, its core achievements – Atlantic Star Adventures (ASA) and Atlantic On-board Internships (AOBI) – will continue operating independently from October 2026 onwards.

The numbers that matter:

  • 102 maritime tourism enterprises reached through both the capacity building activities and regional encounters across the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Martinique;
  • 223 certificates awarded through the project’s training programmes;
  • 2 Starlight-certified nautical companies – the first of their kind in the Canary Islands and Portugal;
  • 4 Outermost Regions united through transnational cooperation.

This result would not have been possible without the commitment of our consortium partners, participating enterprises, training providers and regional stakeholders across the Outermost Regions. We also thank CINEA and the European Commission for their support through EMFAF, as well as everyone who took part in the project’s capacity-building activities and co-creation workshops.

ASA & AOBI: Standing on Their Own Feet

Atlantic Star Adventures (ASA) and  Atlantic On-board Internships (AOBI) are now operating as transnational products, bringing together nautical tourism enterprises from the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Martinique. Both have progressed from co-created ideas to live platforms, supported by dedicated branding, digital channels, cooperation agreements between participating providers and mechanisms for their ongoing maintenance and promotion.

ASA has already delivered its first Madeira–Gran Canaria crossing, and preparations are under way for a second edition.

Both products are currently attracting clients (bookings and interns) through their platforms, already generating revenue across all members.

For instance, Atlantic Star Adventures is launching its second Madeira–Canary Islands crossing this November. Following last year's success, this edition expands the experience with a new adventure: a one-week trip exploring Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas Islands.

From October 2026, ASA will be managed by Nautic Ocean and AOBI by BIOSEAN, supporting participating providers and developing new opportunities.

A Model for Future Cooperation

TWINNEDbySTARS leaves behind more than a set of individual activities. It has tested a practical way of developing marine tourism initiatives across geographically distant island regions.

The approach brought together stakeholder mapping, local co-creation workshops, demand-led training, product development, market testing and cooperation agreements between enterprises. Rather than treating these steps as separate tasks, the project connected them into one process: local needs informed the training; training supported product development; and market feedback helped refine the final offer.

This provides a useful reference for other island and coastal territories seeking to develop tourism experiences that are environmentally responsible, rooted in local knowledge and designed with the businesses that will eventually deliver them.

The relationships developed with enterprises, regional authorities, universities, maritime schools, chambers of commerce and sectoral organisations provide a starting point for future cooperation beyond the project’s lifetime.

Training Resources: Continue Learning with TWINNEDbySTARS

The TWINNEDbySTARS project may be coming to an end, but selection of training resources developed through TWINNEDbySTARS will remain available through the project website while it is maintained online for 5 years.

These materials were created with nautical tourism enterprises across the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Martinique. They bring together practical guidance on digital communication, astrotourism, marine interpretation and sustainable tourism practices.

By registering through the TWINNEDbySTARS website, visitors can access the project’s training area, including recorded sessions, presentations and supporting materials on digital communication, astrotourism, navigation, marine interpretation and sustainable tourism practices.

Available resources include:

  • AI for Social Media
    Practical sessions, multilingual presentations, guidance materials and the Surf Canaries case study, designed to help tourism businesses improve their digital communication and customer outreach.

  • Introductory sessions on astrotourism, maritime heritage and navigation  – including the Stellar Tour and selected masterclasses, available.

  • Complete Marine Starguide course – full theoretical programme, observation scripts and practical guidance, available through Atlantic Star Adventures and the TWINNEDbySTARS training area.
  • Digital marketing masterclass
    Experimentation and online tactics to attract more customers, available in Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Ocean and hydrophone resources
    Including the interview with hydrophone developer Robb Nichols: 27 Years of Making Hydrophones Accessible.

Specialist Training and Future Development

The project’s specialised resources will continue to support ASA and AOBI. Marine Starguide materials will be managed through ASA, while Bioacoustics and Hydrophones materials will be managed through AOBI, supporting new providers joining the two platforms.

In parallel, two micro-credentials are planned through the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). These future learning pathways are expected to offer formal learning experiences, including ECTS recognition and a European-level certificate. Details, eligibility conditions and availability should be confirmed by ULPGC before publication.

Policy Lessons for the Future

Based on the evidence gathered throughout the project, TWINNEDbySTARS identifies five policy priorities to support the future of sustainable marine tourism in the Outermost Regions:

  • Make European funds more accessible for micro-enterprises by combining small grants or vouchers with clear technical assistance, mentoring and certification guidance.
  • Link training activities to practical investment and financial needs of micro-enterprises, helping businesses turn new knowledge into mentorised actions, especially related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, low-emission mobility and digital communication.
  • Build common quality and sustainability principles for transnational tourism products, while allowing each region to adapt delivery to its market, infrastructure, language and operating conditions.
  • Give new tourism products time to grow in the market, with staged support for brand design, testing, market entry, customer acquisition and early growth.

Taken together, these priorities provide a practical basis for helping marine tourism enterprises move from promising ideas to viable, long-term activity across the Outermost Regions.
