The blue economy, comprising diverse sectors such as shipping, fisheries, energy generation, and coastal tourism, contributes to 4.5 million direct jobs in Europe, offering prospects for modernization and job creation.
Within the context of the blue economy, coastal and maritime tourism emerge as the largest sector in terms of gross added value, profit, and employment. However, there is an ongoing challenge in defining the boundaries of this sector, impacting the clarity and consistency of measuring its economic impact.

Introducing TWINNEDbySTARS
The project aims at increasing the competitiveness of maritime tourism activity in remote territories while contributing to protecting marine biodiversity, preserving cultural heritage, and developing marine astrotourism. To do so, the project acts in three areas: strengthening partnerships already in operation, capacity building, and co-creation opportunities for the design and implementation of transnational eco-tourism products. The project extends across four Atlantic Outermost Regions, which are located at the natural nautical crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, taking advantage of the trade winds, the Canary Current, and the Gulf Stream, eastwards from the Canaries to Martinique and returning westwards via the Azores and Madeira.
TWINNEDbySTARS is on a mission to elevate maritime tourism in the outermost regions, with an emphasis on sustainability through advocacy for marine biodiversity conservation and cultural preservation. How do we plan to achieve this lofty goal?
It is all about partnerships, capacity building, and a dash of collaborative magic in the cauldron of tourism product development. Imagine a 36-month journey that will entail analysis, stakeholder engagement, training implementation, marketing dynamisation, and the grand finale: product testing: achieving sustainable maritime tourism.
That is exactly what we are working towards. TWINNEDbySTARS is not just about boosting maritime tourism; it is about creating lasting impact through a symphony of conservation efforts, cultural celebrations, and, of course, a dash of adventure. Get ready to embark on this incredible journey with us!

Did you know how many social and environmental IMPACTS maritime leisure activities and ports have?
Maritime tourism and port operations bring economic and recreational benefits but also pose social and environmental challenges. From climate change to biodiversity loss, these issues are vital to our coastal and marine interactions. We must address impacts like habitat fragmentation, altered hydrology, water quality, and waste management. Additionally, tackling issues such as invasive species, marine collisions, and pollution demands a collaborative approach involving governments, businesses, and civil society. Through sustainable practices, public awareness, and scientific research, we can safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.
